Wetsuits (2)

UK & Ireland water temperature ranges roughly from 8°C in winter to 16°C in summer. As a general guide: 3/2mm for summer, 4/3mm for spring/autumn, 5/4mm with boots, gloves and a hood for winter — thicker in Scotland and Ireland than the south coast of England.

O'Neill Men's Epic 5/4mm Back Zip Full Wetsuit

From a brand that's been building wetsuits in Santa Cruz since the birthplace of modern cold-water surfing — 100% Ultraflex neoprene with FluidFlex Firewall chest and back panels for real winter warmth. The right pick for UK & Ireland deep-winter conditions.

Boots, Gloves & Hoods (3)

O'Neill Wetsuits Epic 5mm Round Toe Boots

Genuinely reviewed for real UK cold-water use — one verified customer specifically noted no leaks surfing in 8°C water, another confirmed still-good condition after two years of regular use.

O'Neill 3mm Epic Gloves

A dependable mid-weight glove from an established, globally recognised cold-water brand — a solid all-round pick for most UK & Ireland conditions outside deep winter.

Lomo Wetsuit Hood 5mm Hi Vis Yellow

From a UK retailer selling direct, not a third-party reseller. The hi-vis colour is a genuine safety upgrade over a standard black hood — easier for lifeguards or fellow surfers to spot you in the water, not just a colour choice.

Leashes (1)

RNLI's own surf safety advice specifically calls this out: always wear a leash, so you don't become separated from your board.

Northcore 6mm Surfboard Leash (6ft, 7ft, 8ft or 9ft)

A high-spec leash rated for 2-8ft surf — 6mm urethane cord for strength without excess weight, double stainless steel swivel bearings, and Northcore's own Tech Flex connectors to reduce stress points. One experienced reviewer specifically praised its durability through winter sessions in genuinely large, powerful surf.

Safety (3)

RNLI advises always carrying a means of calling for help — a waterproof phone pouch is the simplest way to do that in the water.

JOTO 2 Pack Waterproof Phone Pouch, IPX8

IPX8-rated to 100 feet, with a floating air-cushion design so a dropped phone surfaces rather than sinks — genuinely useful at the beach, not just in the water. Backed by an exceptionally large, credible review base: over 85,000 ratings at 4.4 stars.

SwimCell Emergency Whistles (Pack of 3)

Marine-rated, pealess design so it can't jam or freeze, over 85dB dual-tone, floats, and clips straight onto a buoyancy aid or wetsuit zip pull. From a genuine UK small business making open-water safety gear.

Surfboards (1)

A soft-top foam board is the standard, sensible starting point — see our beginner's guide for why.

Wavestorm 8ft Classic Longboard Surfboard

The best-selling beginner surfboard in history — over 500,000 units sold. 8ft gives the extra volume and stability that genuinely helps while you're learning to paddle and pop up, exactly what the beginner's guide on this site recommends starting with.

Surf Wax (1)

Warm-water wax won't grip properly at UK & Ireland temperatures — make sure whatever you buy is genuinely cold-water rated.

Mrs Palmers Cold Water Surfboard Wax

Genuinely rated for 8-12°C — matching UK winter water temperatures precisely, not a generic wax stretched to cover conditions it wasn't designed for. From an established brand (since 1988) trusted by beginners through to elite pros.

Towelling, Changing Robes & Ponchos (1)

Dryrobe Advance

The original — designed by a Cornwall surfer specifically for changing on cold, wet UK beaches. Fully waterproof and windproof outer, fleece lining proven to help raise core temperature after a session. £1 from every sale supports the RNLI.

Dry Bags & Backpacks (1)

Aquapac "Wet & Dry" 25L Waterproof Backpack

Genuine IPX6 stormproof protection with a detachable internal dry bag to keep clean kit separate from wet gear — and it floats if it goes overboard, a real practical safety feature, not just marketing copy.

Hats & Beanies (1)

Lomo Neoprene Beanie Hat

3mm neoprene, sold direct by Lomo Watersport, a genuine UK retailer. Works the same way a wetsuit does — traps and warms a layer of water against your head, since most hats stop insulating the moment they're soaked through.

A note before you buy anything here

No wetsuit, leash, or piece of kit is a substitute for knowing the conditions, surfing between the black and white chequered flag at a lifeguarded beach, and going with someone else. See the full safety guidance on the live conditions page, or go directly to RNLI water safety advice for the current, complete detail.
